Architecture Beyond Colombo
March 2008
As part of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects’ efforts to regionally promote Architecture and the work of Architects, the 5th of a series of regional exhibitions was held in Negombo in January.
The exhibition was opened by Hon SarathGunarathne, the Deputy Minister of Aviation & Ports, on January 5, 2008 at Negombo Town Hall, and it continued for a further two days, thereafter. In addition to the display of SLIA members’ creative architectural work with 70 design panels, there were 41 trade stalls where manufacturers and distributors of building-related products showcased their products under the umbrella of SLIA.
According to the co-conveners, Negombo-based Architects BandulaWelikadaarachchi and SuranjanRanasinghe, the exhibition was a tremendous success, with a large public participation.
The general public, politicians, professionals, and the students of the area have been genuinely impressed by an exhibition of this nature and magnitude. It was the first time that many of the visitors gained awareness of the contributions and skills which professional architects could offer. Trade stallholders too received excellent public exposure for their products and many came away with substantial sales orders. All participants and visitors were eager that the exhibition should become an annual event in Negombo.
