The 28th annual sessions of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) will be ceremonially inaugurated at Water’s Edge Colombo on February 17, 2010. Concurrently, the SLIA is hosting the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) 19th General Assembly and Conference 2010.
The National Conference on Architecture and the CAA conference will be held at the Hotel Cinnamon Grand, Colombo on February 17 and 18, 2010. The Conference will be themed “ARCHITECTURE rethinking sustainability”. Buildings of today have been identified as the biggest guzzlers of earth’s depleting energy resources. Thus the role of the Architect in creating a sustainable future becomes important. Thereby, the practice of “green architecture” and creation of “green buildings” has become a rising trend in Architecture. The conference deliberations will focus on traditional, indigenous techniques specific to cultures. These have evolved through time and address specific societal needs, climatic conditions and are environment sensitive. Contemporary Architecture where these have been addressed has resulted in wonderful building solutions contributing towards the creation of sustainable habitats.
Futhermore, the ARCHITECT 2010 exhibition of Architects’ work and the Trade will be open to the public from February 18 to 21, 2010 at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Exhibition Centre, Colombo. It will showcase members’ work as well as the latest and the best quality materials available in the market today. The works of Architects who have been the recipients of the design awards for 2010 as well as products which have received product awards for the current year will also be on display.
