Continuous Professional Development
Programme – Event 2 – Session 2009-2010

A forum to discuss the theme ‘sustainable design, from cradle to grave + beyond’ was undertaken by the Professional Affairs Board of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects as held on the 4th of December 2009 at the main ballroom of Hotel Galadari.

Importance of understanding of the site and context, was broadly outlined by Archts. Gayan Herath and E A T Suresh.

Archt. Vinod Jayasinghe presented his thoughts on materiality in sustainable architecture. The presentation was enhanced by his display of examples of innovative use of material from his project portfolio.

Prof. Raufdeen Rameezdeen of the Faculty of Building Economics addressed the aspect of sustainable construction.

Process of managing energy use and cost without sacrificing the required comfort levels and functional needs of an indoor environment was identified by Eng. Sanjaya Ramanayake, Director of Nosters (Pvt) Ltd in his presentation titled ‘use and end use’.

Archt. Sanat Liyanage in his inspirational presentation ‘my green and other works’ demonstrated his own efforts at reducing high energy use, excessive resource consumption and undue maintenance.

The underlying train of thought running through the presentations was that Sustainable Design is the responsibility of the project team from inception to completion of a project, yet extends beyond through the entire life cycle of the project.
